Former CNN Correspondent Examines American Media's China Coverage (Discussion and Q&A)

On March 23, 2023, the OPC, ChinaFile and Strategy Risks hosted a book night to discuss “Assignment China - An Oral History of American Journalists in the People's Republic,” a new book by former CNN correspondent Mike Chinoy, who covered the Tiananmen massacre for the network, among other major stories. His book captures the voices of dozens of American journalists who covered everything from the Chinese Civil War (1945-1949) through the Covid epidemic and subsequent expulsions.

During the program, he discussed a number of issues surrounding past and present American media coverage of China, with moderator William J. Holstein, former China correspondent and past president of the OPC. He addressed issues such as: whether the American media misjudged Xi Jinping's rise to power 10 years ago; whether American media's coverage of China has become too negative ; and if U.S.-Chinese relations continue to deteriorate, would more American and Western journalists be denied visas or pressured to leave the country.

This segment includes the entire discussion and Q&A that followed Chinoy’s slide presentation.

ChinaFile is an online magazine published by the Asia Society and Strategy Risks is a consultancy founded by Isaac Stone Fish, who spent seven years in Beijing.

Holstein is co-author of the forthcoming, “Battlefield Cyber: How China and Russia Are Undermining Our Democracy and National Security.”
