HOOK: Hey guys I’m so excited! Today we are going to start our first book study on the BEAT. Stay tuned we’re gonna jump right in!

INTRODUCTION: Hey everyone, today we are doing something a little different. Over the next four Fridays we are going to be studying the book of Philippians together.

WHY: Because it’s a short book. It’s easy to read. AND it’s packed with all sorts of application.

Alright, so any time you study a book of the bible it’s critical that you check out the background info first. So here we go…

BACKGROUND:
1. CHURCH: The church at Philippi was founded by the Apostle Paul on his second missionary journey in A.D. 49 (Acts 16:1-40).
2. Somewhere along the line Paul gets thrown in prison.
3. Someone sends word to the church in Philippi that Paul was in prison in Rome
4. WHY? – One day while Paul was in prison one of the main leaders of that church named Epaphroditus traveled some 800 miles to bring to Paul three things…
a. A financial gift from the church that he wants to hand deliver from the church
b. Report on how things were going in the church
c. To express the church’s concern for Paul situation in prison.
5. WHEN – And so in response to this visit Paul wrote this letter from prison and sent Epaphroditis back to Philippi to hand deliver his letter to them.

PURPOSE: SO WHY DID HE WRITE?
• To thank them for the financial gift they had given him
• Provide spiritual wisdom to them as a church
• To update them on his situation to tell them, “hey I’m in prison. Thank you for the prayers but I’m doing well.”
• He wanted to express his love and concern for this church and let them know that he is praying for them.

THEME: The major theme of the book is JOY! The word joy, rejoice or some form of that word is used 16 times in the book. And so the lesson here is that even though Paul is in prison he wants to demonstrate to his original readers and ultimately to us how it is possible to experience true authentic joy and happiness in spite of your personal circumstances.

SO, your assignment is to read Philippians chapter 1.
