December 23, 1945: NYC Mayor Fiorello Laguardia reads "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" on WNYC radio.
Mayor Laguardia's live reading of the Clement Moore classic is the concluding segment of his 1945 pre-Christmas broadcast. This was a very special Christmas: the first celebration of the holiday since the end of World War II.
Music for the broadcast was provided by the Collegiate Chorale conducted by Robert Shaw and the Queen's College Chamber Ensemble conducted by Boris Schwartz. Tommy Cowan announced the program
(WNYC was NYC's municipally owned radio station. It's now a property of New York Public Radio).
Many years later Chicago Mayor Harold Washington, at the insistence of Michelle Damico, read "A Visit From Saint Nicholas" on WXRT radio. You can listen to it on Charlie Meyerson's website at https://www.meyersonstrategy.com/2016/12/mayor-harold-washington-reads-night.html
