How to change the Rear Wheel Hub Damper of your Motorcycle ( wheel change )
Do you recognize the feeling when the power from the chain to the rear wheel feels noticeable not smoothly and even a bit awkward. This can indicate that your rear wheel hub dampers are worn out and need to be replaced.
Used tools
• Paddock stand, if your bike doesn’t have a centerstand
• Torque wrench size 32, 113 Nm, 83 ft lb
• Open-ended spanner or ring spanner size 12
• Tape measure
• Nylon hammer (In my case, not under ‘normal’ circumstances)
The procedure is fairly simple:
1. Disassemble the rear wheel
For this you need to loosen the bolt of the shaft and then loosen the chain tensioners so that the chain has more leeway.
Move the wheel in the direction of the engine, so you can take the chain off the sprocket (and let it rest in between the sprocket and swingarm). Note the brake caliper.
Then loosen the bolt of the shaft with a torque wrench and remove de shaft.
Now you can take out the wheel.
2. Replace damper
In my case you can see that the dampers are worn out and I have already used temporary solutions in the form of inner tubes of a bicycle.
Take the old ones out and replace them with the new original Honda dampers in the right way.
For your information: The original honda dampers have cost me about EUR 60.
3. Reassemble the rear wheel
Tip: before you reassemble the rear wheel, you might want to clean it first since you’ll never find better circumstances to do it.
Now that de dampers have been replaced you can reassemble the rear wheel. Do this in reverse order of step 1.
Make sure the chain tension is correct when reassembling. This can vary per model. For the 954rr I hold 4-5 cm (1.57 -1.97 inches) as the maximum clearance (when the suspension is in charge).
Do it every time with a quarter turn or half turn, because that way you tighten the chain and the rear wheel gradually and evenly.
Turn the wheel to make sure sprocket and chain are aligned. You can also roughly check this using the indicators on the swing arm.
When the chain tension is correct, tighten the bolt of the shaft with a torque wrench 113 Nm).
Tip: check the chain tension after your first ride.
And that’s it. Thank you for watching the video and good luck with it.
