Hair Loss Diagnosis & Treatment for the Family Physician
In this 50 minute video, Dr. Donovan provides a basic approach to the diagnosis and treatment of hair loss for family physicians.
In the lecture, Dr. Donovan reviews the categorization of hair loss into the common 'non-scarring' group as well as the less common 'scarring' group. He reviews the importance of asking patients about the so called "5 S's" in diagnosing hair loss - including questions about the speed of the hair loss, sites involved, symptoms, shedding, supplements (prescription or non prescription) used.
An basic approach to male and female androgenetic alopecia is given including use of minoxidil, anti-androgens, laser, PRP, scalp micro pigmentation and hair systems and hair transplantation. For women, he emphasizes the additional importance of detecting symptoms and signs that would suggest a diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) as these patients require additional work up. For alopecia areata, Dr. Donovan stresses the importance of an evidence-based approach including use of topical steroids and steroid injections. For telogen effluvium, the recommendation is given to search for the underlying cause of the shedding and the "SEND" memory tool is introduced as a helpful guide. Finally Dr. Donovan recommends referral for biopsy in patients with significant scalp symptoms including itching, burning and pain.
