So, if you've been wondering about Turtle, the DIY electric pedal assisted quad bicycle... thing... well, I've not given up on it, but I needed to step back and try to figure out some stuff, which I'm still stuck on.

In the mean time, I have a pile of bicycles, and all the Turtle parts, motor, batteries, the new wheels, all kinds of expensive stuff sitting there, waiting.

One of the hardest parts to deal with, is I have to completely build something, before I can really even start testing. I have no idea if the motor is any good, or batteries and range or anything.

In the last video I got to test the electric motor finally on the Trike.

In this video, I'm testing pedaling the trike, and the electric motor, and the battery, to check out the range, and if anything else will break... I've worked through a few of the problems with the existing design, so now we can start thinking of going forward, instead of Two Steps Backwards! And for now we'll keep trying. According to the GPS app on my phone, we got almost 8 miles, which is about half way to town. That's a good start really.

Going into this, I have no idea if pedaling will be really practical, but I still want it, as a back up if nothing else. Ideally, though, I'm planning to pedal most of the time, like 70% maybe, and then use the electric for an occasional boost. That would make a big difference if I have a head wind for example. If I was only going to town once in a while to check mail, I could figure out how big of a battery pack I'd need to do that, and I'd just make an electric mini bike and be done. But what I really want is a continuous solution, so I can pedal, and the electric helps me, for a much longer distance. Then, when I get solar panels mounted, I could go really far. Like go camping. Cross Country. That's the goal. Getting my mail once a week is just the first step.

Anyway, with all that in mind, pedaling is pretty important. The weight of the motorcycle wheels should be offset by how easily they roll across the sand, and when I factor in 50 pounds of cargo like groceries, I think it'll all work out really well. I hope!

Anyway, thanks for checking the video out!
