Jon from CNCROi.com recently demonstrated the process of creating a custom 3D carved portrait using his CNC router, highlighting the unique capabilities of his equipment and craftsmanship. The portrait was inspired by a full-size big wheel that Jon created while living in Perth, Australia. To create the design, Jon used a tiling system with his CNC router, as the pieces were too large to be cut in one shot. This experience marked a significant milestone for Jon, as it was the first time he had used the CNC router for carving, even though he had owned the machine for over a decade.
The portrait depicted a CNC router carving itself, showcasing Jon’s ability to use his equipment to create custom, detailed work. The machine's 3D carving software has greatly improved over the years, and Jon’s background in 3D animation has played a key role in his success with these projects. The final product was featured in *Make Magazine*, where Jon sent pictures and text about his project to promote the capabilities of ShopBot and his business at the time, CNC King. The feature provided Jon with significant exposure, and the image from the magazine is still visible on his CNCROi.com homepage.
In the carving process, Jon noted that the portrait had about half an inch (roughly 18 millimeters) of depth from peak to valley. The texture was smooth, allowing a tactile experience where viewers could run their fingers over the design and feel the photograph's contours. Jon applied a cherry stain to enhance the contrast, allowing the stain to pool in the valleys while being sanded off at the peaks. This technique brought out the depth and detail in the final product.
Jon also discussed a small issue that occurred during the carving process. Initially, he was making a lot of dust rather than chips, which led to excessive heat buildup, causing some minor mistakes in the carving. He quickly adjusted the cutting speed and finished the project properly. The process involved two passes: the first to remove large material with a quarter-inch mill, and the second with a smaller, one-eighth-inch ball nose bit to refine the details. Jon considered using a one-sixteenth-inch ball nose bit for higher resolution, but he found that the level of detail was sufficient for his needs.
The final carved portrait exhibited a 2.5D effect, where the depth of the image varied depending on the viewing angle. This added a unique, dynamic quality to the piece, unlike flat photographs or laser carvings. The tactile nature of the portrait provided a new, immersive experience for viewers. The entire carving process took almost two days, which was much longer than laser cutting but offered a depth and dimension that a laser could not replicate due to its lack of a feedback system for depth.
Jon expressed his enjoyment of working in the 3D space and plans to create more of these types of projects. CNCROi.com offers custom 3D carving in any size, shape, or material, with a full-sheet machine capable of handling larger projects.
