‘Den of Thieves 2’ Steals Box Office Crown With $15 Million

Lionsgate's heist thriller Den of Thieves 2: Pantera debuted at No. 1, grossing $15.5 million from 3,008 North American theaters. The sequel to Den of Thieves (2018) performed slightly better than the original, which launched with $15.2 million. Despite the positive opening, the film needs strong staying power to justify its $40 million production budget. Den of Thieves 2 earned a "B+" grade from CinemaScore and a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Gerard Butler returns as Big Nick, chasing ex-marine Donnie (O'Shea Jackson Jr.) in Europe as he plans a massive diamond heist.

Though Lionsgate typically mitigates risk by selling foreign rights, the studio hopes this success signals a recovery after a challenging 2023. The company faced several flops, including Borderlands and Never Let Go, but upcoming films like John Wick spinoff Ballerina and Saw XI are expected to perform better.

In contrast, Paramount's Better Man, a musical biopic about Robbie Williams, struggled at the box office, grossing just $1 million from 1,291 theaters. Directed by The Greatest Showman’s Michael Gracey, the film features a CGI monkey portraying Williams. Despite positive reviews, Better Man failed to generate commercial interest, earning only $4.7 million to date. It was produced independently for $110 million and acquired by Paramount for $25 million.

Meanwhile, A24’s The Brutalist, a historical epic, earned $1.38 million from 68 screens, marking a successful limited release. The film, which won Golden Globes for best drama, best director, and best actor, is set to expand further on January 24.

Overall, the weekend box office was soft, partly due to ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles.

Charleson was beloved for her warmth, loyalty, and humor. She had a deep connection to fans and enjoyed moments with close friends, particularly her love for animals, Elvis Presley, and The Eagles. Her legacy as a soap opera icon and cherished friend will remain unforgettable.
