‘What Jennifer Did’: Netflix doc explores shocking Ont. murder-for-hire case

The Netflix documentary "What Jennifer Did" delves into the shocking murder-for-hire case in Markham, Ontario, nearly 15 years ago. It focuses on Jennifer Pan's decade-long deception to please her strict parents, culminating in a plot that left her mother dead.

Jennifer, born to Vietnamese refugees, faced immense pressure to excel academically and socially, following her parents' example of success. However, a knee injury shattered her Olympic figure skating dreams, leading to a decline in her self-confidence.

As her academic performance faltered, Jennifer resorted to forging report cards to maintain her facade of success. Meanwhile, her parents closely monitored her activities, restricting her social life and interactions.

In high school, Jennifer clandestinely dated Daniel Wong, hiding the relationship from her parents due to their disapproval. She also falsified her university enrollment, spending her days at libraries while pretending to attend classes.

Despite her efforts to deceive her parents, they eventually uncovered her lies, leading to confrontations and restrictions. Jennifer's relationship with Wong further strained under her parents' scrutiny, leading to their breakup.

Desperate to regain her parents' trust and continue her relationship with Wong, Jennifer resorted to extreme measures. She conspired with Wong to hire hitmen to kill her parents, envisioning a sizable inheritance.

The plan went awry when Jennifer's father survived the attack and implicated her in the scheme. Police investigations uncovered Jennifer's involvement, leading to her arrest along with Wong and the hired hitmen.

During the trial, Jennifer claimed she never intended to harm her mother, presenting conflicting accounts of her plans. However, she was found guilty of first-degree murder, along with Wong and the hitmen, and sentenced to life in prison.

In 2023, the Court of Appeal for Ontario ordered new trials, citing errors in the jury instructions. The case is now under review by the Supreme Court of Canada, prolonging Jennifer's legal ordeal.
