THE SIGHT & THE SOUND 4/7 : Balkan Bulgarian IL-18 LZ-BEH documentary from Budapest to Algiers
This video features a cargo flight onboard Malev Hungarian Airlines operated by Balkan Bulgarian Airlines IL-18 in November 1998 from Budapest to Algiers carrying live stock of one day old chicks. This time the camera was perfect.
Added bonus : Engine startup and taxying with open doors to compensate the missing ventilation on the ground providing fresh air and to prevent massive overheating of the cabin due to the emerging body heat from the live stock.
The ultimate filming challenge :
Bending over the boxes with the live stock in standing position and holding the camera with stretched arms towards the window without being able to check the output through the monitor. It was very painful.
The contaminated windows were beyond description. Depending on humidity it was from time to time impossible to do reasonable filming. In this sense, the IL-18 is one of the most difficult planes to produce a video.
Due to Civil War in Algeria, the country and especially its airports were under strict military control. Taking picturers was extremely dangerous and beared the risk of arrest and containment, as happened to me a year earlier in Constantine, Algeria. So, I needed to do the filming strictly "under cover".
Last but not least, there was a problem with hydraulic pressure as we approached Algiers and I was advised to return to the rear cabin in the back. I refused and continued taping the engine sound the best I could...
Alltogether, exactly t h i s is the challenge of Classic Aviation and this makes it so special.
Enjoy with me the Sights & Sounds of Classic Aviation.
Thanks for watching
