Crushing Rock for Gold!

In this video, we took some mineral (gold, silver, etc.) bearing ore that was given to us by various customers. We are using a couple methods. The first is by using a hand held mortar and pestle to manually crush the ore. The second method is using a pneumatic rock crushing hammer and a larger steel mortar. Both of these items can be found for sale on our website at www.highplainsprospectors.com. These tools are good for the prospector or hobbyist that is looking to sample ore for the presence of precious metals. Both methods work well to crush ore but the manual method is much slower and is more suitable for small samples. The Thor Rock Crushing pneumatic hammer is good for both small and medium sized sampling and gets the work done much quicker.
Hard rock prospecting is really hard work better left to the big boys. However, that doesn't mean that the weekend prospector or small operation can't have fun pulling gold and minerals out of rock. Much of the gold found in rocks is pulled out using chemical methods. It is spread out through the rock in concentrations that do not make it feasible for the average person to pull out. And, unless you are willing to mess around with some very dangerous and deadly chemicals, you probably want to stick to simply crushing down stones that have visible gold in them. Although some of those specimens may be more valuable as specimens than the value of the gold you can obtain from them. The methods we use in this video are some very good and easy methods to crush samples down to extract the gold and other minerals that can be found in rock.
This is one of three or four videos we will do with these rocks that were given to us. The next video will be us further concentrating the minerals using a blue bowl or other separation device to remove the black sand and undesired light weight material. Once we have accumulated enough heavy metal to make an ingot, we will smelt it down in our Kwik Kiln and pour it into a mold to create an ingot.
