Rescuing orphan baby elephant Olorien | Sheldrick Trust
In early June 2020, Masai herdsmen reported a lone calf that was trying to follow their grazing cattle. Rangers from Elephant Aware also spotted the young elephant in the Siana area of the Masai Mara, and reported her presence to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). The decision was made to wait and see if she would be absorbed back into a herd. However, several days passed and while a number of herds came and went, she was left behind despite her plaintive cries.
By Saturday 6th of June, she was still on her own and rapidly losing condition. This video tells the story of her rescue and arrival into the care of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where she joined other orphaned elephants being afforded a second chance.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.
