Replacing a 12 volt supply/charger. I carry out delicate electrical reconstructive surgery.

I was working away in the peace and quiet of Ermintrude the other day, when I was enveloped in a miasma of electrical burning fumes. A quick bit of sleuth work tracked it down to the 12 volt supply/charger (it was smoking), so this video shows how I went about replacing it (basically unscrewing it from the wall and screwing the replacement back on).

Of course, Ermintrude is a 1996 Swift Royale, so the set up is going to look different from newer vans and other makes of the same vintage. But to my knowledge, most, if not all vehicles have the same fundamental arrangement: 230 volts in to a consumer unit and 230 volts out to a 12 volt transformer (the supply/charger) via one of the mcb's. The main challenge on your own vehicle will be identifying the consumer unit (should be easy - same as in the house, but smaller) and the 12 volt supply (slightly harder, but most are labelled). There may be other minor differences, such as there may be two 12 volt outlets from the transformer, one for charging and one for supply.

I should point out that I get no benefit from mentioning Devon Caravan Recyclers. They are a goldmine of parts, so worth a call if you're having trouble sourcing bits.

If you have any questions, leave a comment and I will do my best to answer.
