Farrowing Pigs On Pasture - Bad Experience. Our Berkshire gilt finally had her piglets on pasture but things did not go well at all.

To being with, Helen, our Berkshire gilt, was 4 days overdue. When she did go into labor, she had a terrible time giving birth to the piglets. She had an extended labor, many aborted piglets and some that didn't survive after they arrived. Finally she had a retained piglet and the veterinarian had to perform an emergency procedure to save the gilt's life.

Also, we have a serious problem in rural agriculture when it comes to accessibility of resources for animal health. We had a lot of difficulty finding a vet that would come to the farm and check our pig after we determined she was not doing well and may potentially die from farrowing.
