At the height of his fame, Dick Gregory may have been the most influential comedian in America, but he wasn’t only concerned with making people laugh. Mark Anthony Neal of Duke’s African & African American Studies Department discusses how Gregory used comedy in the quest for civil and human rights.

Mark Anthony Neal is the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of African & African American Studies and Chair of the Department of African & African American Studies at Duke University where he offers courses on Black Masculinity, Popular Culture, and Digital Humanities, including signature courses on Michael Jackson & the Black Performance Tradition, and The History of Hip-Hop, which he co-teaches with Grammy Award Winning producer 9th Wonder (Patrick Douthit).

The Department of African & African American Studies (AAAS) is Duke’s center for interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship on Africa and people of African descent around the world, in particular the Black Atlantic. The department hosts anthropologists, humanists, political scientists, historians, sociologists, geneticists, scholars of the performing arts, and literature whose work engages questions of race, class, gender, sexuality, politics, and the law to study the conditions and experiences of Africans and communities of the African diaspora.
