How To Grow Jade Plant From Stem & Leaf Cutting | Propagate | Water | Sunlight | Transplant & Care

I will show you how to propagate Jade ( Crassula ovata) by stem cutting and leaf cutting.
Cuttings - you can use a hand pruner or propagation knife. I’m using regular knife. Make sure to clean it before using it. Avoid taking cuttings from a very small plant. Take cuttings from 8” to 10” plant or your very mature Jade plant. More stems will grow where you make the cut. It is suggested that you let it callus over means let the cut dry and heal before propagating to prevent root rot. You can keep them in shade for few days. They will be fine for a week or even more if you can’t plant it for some reason as long they are in cool, dry and shady place.

Stem cutting - For small stem you can make the cut flush with the end of them stem where it’s attach to the plant. You can cut new smaller stems from top of the plant. If you are cutting a portion of big stem make sure to cut above the leaves. It will grow multiple stems or you can cut it between the lines or rings on the stem.

Leaf cutting - For leaf you can cut it with a knife or simply twist it with your hand. Make sure to cut more mature ( older) leaves. Probably from the bottom of the plant. Not the fresh growth on top.

Propagation in water - Just take a small size glass or plastic cup. You can use small vase depending on the size of the cutting and leaves. Simply place the stem in water just the bottom part of the stem not leaves. For leaves place it in water in very small container. Make sure only bottom of the leaf is in water not the whole leaf.
Keep them in indirect sunlight. You will see it start rooting in few weeks. Make sure to top up the water as it evaporates and change water once a week. I don’t like to do it in water. I forget to keep the water level. Also leaves rot sometimes

Stem Propagation in soil - Use any regular potting mix ( don’t need any special soil ) For stem add some water in the soil and mix to a consistency when sticking together. When you squeeze there shouldn’t be any water dripping. Take 2” or4 “ pot according to the size of cutting. Make sure pot has drainage holes. Just push the cutting down in it. If you want to plant the same day use dry soil and wait few days before watering. Make sure to keep soil moist. When the top inch soil is dry give water. I bottom water it. Use any small bowl you have place the pot inside and add water in the bowl. That way you don’t disturb the plant. If stem is heavy, you can support it with wooden skewers. You can get them from dollar store.

Leaf propagation in soil - use a tray or wife bowl. It doesn’t have to be deep as long as you can put one inch layer of soil. Lay the leaves flat on the top. Mist / spray it with water daily not too much just to moisten the top layer of soil. If you didn’t let them callus over then mist it after few days. I cover mine with clear lid / plate so I don’t have to mist daily it also prevents getting any pests specially fungus gnats. You can also push the tips of the leaves in moist soil. Put them vertically or in an angle. I don’t do that coz that they keep developing roots for long time and not produce baby plants for long time specially if you put it vertically. Just water them and don’t let them dry out.

Keep all propagations in indirect light for 4-6 weeks or until fully established then you can move them in full son. Putting them in direct light can burn their leaves or dry them fast. This only for propagation. Jade plants can be in full sunlight. They grow very well.
