John Weaver - 'Pastorale' for Flute and Organ | Audrey Emata and Eddie Zheng

Dr. John Weaver wrote his 'Pastorale' for Flute and Organ in 2001. An interplay between two instruments played by wind, yet at opposite ends by their way of expression - the flute achieving colors of sound through the breath, and the organ finding different timbres through registration and rhythmic nuance, Weaver's 'Pastorale' unfolds a mystic landscape of modal dialogue and a climactic narrative that builds to a climax of rhythmic intensity before fading away into a dream-like atmosphere. The work was commissioned by the Fourth Presbyterian Church, Chicago, and was premiered on February 20th, 2001 by John Weaver and his wife, Marianne Weaver. Dr. Weaver was the Chair of the Organ Department at The Juilliard School from 1987-2004, and at the Curtis Institute from 1972-2003.

Eddie Zheng, a native of New York City, is an MM and recently graduated BM student of Paul Jacobs at the Juilliard School. With a focus on lyrical phrasing and articulate touch combined with thoughtful programming and spoken notes, Eddie has performed in cities throughout North America, such as New York (St. Patrick's Cathedral), Philadelphia (Longwood Gardens), New Haven (Church of the Redeemer), Montreal (St. James United), and Eugene (First United Methodist Church). Overseas, he has performed in China at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Beijing Concert Hall, and Beijing Golden Sail Concert Hall.
