Charles-Marie Widor's penultimate and 9th symphony was named 'Symphonie Gothique' after the Gothic architecture of Saint-Ouen Abbey Church in Rouen, France. This movement, the Andante Sostenuto, features a simple melody accompanied by a rocking chordal figure. The music expands to soaring heights, maintaining a deceptively clear texture even as the lines in the hands and pedal expand to 8 independent voices at once. Widor's masterful blending of the Cavaillé-Coll sound palette, the romantic ebb-and-flow of music, and the contrapuntal clarity between voices attained through the composer's study of Bach are all apparent in this famous and tender movement.
