📍 Location: Yandai Diagonal Street → Di'anmen Outer Street
🎧 Immersive Ambient Sound / ASMR
Di'anmen Outer Street is located at the northern end of the traditional central axis of Beijing's old city. It connects Nanluoguxiang (South Luogu Lane) to the east, borders Shichahai to the west, starts from Di'anmen East-West Street in the south, and ends at the Drum Tower in the north. Spanning two urban districts (Dongcheng and Xicheng), it is nearly 800 meters long. Historically, its southern end was the back gate of the imperial city (Di'anmen), so it was once known as "Houmen Street" (Back Gate Street). Since its formation in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), Di'anmen Outer Street has connected the imperial city to the front and the bustling market to the back. Its commercial function, inherited from history, has continued to this day. As the earliest-formed and most stable commercial street on the central axis, it embodies the ancient Chinese urban planning concept of "palaces in the front, markets in the back".
Divided by Houmen Bridge, the northern section of the street was called "Shizi Street" (Cross Street) in the Yuan Dynasty, "Gulouxia Street" (Street Under the Drum Tower) in the Ming Dynasty, "Gulou Street" (Drum Tower Street) in the Qing Dynasty, and renamed "Gulouqian Street" (Street in Front of the Drum Tower) in 1928. The southern section was known as "Di'anmen Street" in the Qing Dynasty. In 1949, the northern and southern sections were merged and collectively named "Di'anmen Street", and in 1955, it was renamed "Di'anmen Outer Street".
In addition to the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower, Di'anmen Outer Street is home to numerous cultural relics and historic sites. Notable ones include Wanning Bridge, built in the Yuan Dynasty, commonly known as "Haizi Bridge" or "Houmen Bridge"; and Huodezhenjun Temple, commonly referred to as "Huoshen Temple" (Fire God Temple). The well-known Yandai Diagonal Street (Tobacco Pouch Slanted Lane) in northern Beijing is also located here.
Yandai Diagonal Street runs northeast-southwest, with a total length of 232 meters and an average width of 4 meters. The lane houses structures such as Guangfu Temple, Sanyuan Fumo Palace, and the traditional shopfronts of Yandai Diagonal Street, all of which collectively preserve the style of traditional hutongs. According to records, in ancient times, most Manchu bannermen living in northern Beijing had the habit of smoking dry tobacco or water pipes, which promoted the development of the tobacco industry in the city. Many tobacco shops emerged in front of the Drum Tower and outside Di'anmen. Soon, tobacco pouch shops opened one after another along this slanted lane. These shops typically had high steps, and a large wooden tobacco pouch was erected at the entrance as a sign. Gradually, the nickname "Yandai Diagonal Street" (Tobacco Pouch Slanted Lane) spread, and later the original name "Gulou Diagonal Street" (Drum Tower Slanted Lane) was changed to "Yandai Diagonal Street" as its official name. Another theory holds that the narrow and long lane itself resembles the stem of a tobacco pouch: the eastern entrance looks like the mouthpiece of a tobacco pouch, while the western entrance turns southward leading to Yinding Bridge, which resembles the bowl of a tobacco pouch.
Many Citywalk routes in Beijing can start from Di'anmen Outer Street. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, traditional hutongs, and numerous historic sites, it will surely live up to everyone's expectations.
