HOW TO: insert and remove contact lenses
Today we talk about how to put contacts in for beginners, we will go over the insertion of lenses
Frequently asked questions:
“How long can I leave my contact lenses in for?”
If you are using daily disposable lenses then wear them for no longer than 24 hours, and always remove them before sleep. If you are using reusable lenses such as the fortnightlies or monthlies then it’s good practice to discard them after the replacement period.
“If I wear my reusable lenses very rarely, then can I wear them for longer than what it says?”
No, if they are fortnightly lenses, then it’s a fortnight FROM when you opened the seal, and likewise for monthlies it’s one month FROM when you opened the seal. If you are an occasional wearer then you’ll probably benefit from wearing daily disposables as you’re not obliged to wear them more to make up for the cost.
“When I take the lens out of the packaging, do I need to rinse it in saline before I put it into my eye?”
No, the lens should be sterile in the packaging which means there is no need to rinse it separately. Assuming it is sterile, you can insert the lens straight into the eye without rinsing.
“I got taught a different way of inserting the lens, can I still use that method instead?”
Yes, use a method that is the most comfortable for you. If it works, it works. The insertion method I shared today is a "textbook" way of doing it, but if you can find an alternative method for it then go for it, and let me know in the comments what it is.
“If I drop the lens during insertion, should I use a new lens?”
When attempting insertion, try to do it on a clean flat surface. In that way when you drop it you can simply rinse away any debris. My general rule is you should rinse the lens in the solution every 3 attempts. This is because having the lens out in the air for too long will dehydrate the lens making it more and more difficult only for yourself.
“Can I take a nap in contact lenses?”
No.
