Tiger's Nest, (Paro Taktsang Monastery), Bhutan

Legends abound about the Tiger's Nest. One holds that Guru Rinpoche a.k.a. the Padmasambhava, flew here from Tibet on a tiger's back. Another one goes that the wife of an emperor became his disciple and, transforming herself into a tigress, carried him to this place. This is how it came to be known as the Tiger's Nest, the site of the sacred Vajrayana Himalayan Buddhists. Perched on a precarious cliff, the majestic Taktsang monastery was built in 1692 at 10,240 feet above the Paro Valley. It suffered a big fire in 1998, and was restored in 2005.
