The Evolution of Cycle Commuting in Montreal (1996–2016)

Bicycle commuting in Montreal has grown a lot in the past 20 years. From 1996 to 2016, the area of the city with a bike commuting rate above 5% grew by almost 400%.

In this video we look at where in the city this growth occurred and also why it occurred there, from infrastructure to the distribution of jobs to geography.

Data sources:

Numbers on cycle commuting come from the Canadian census. Statistics on jobs by borough were calculated from data provided by Montréal en statistiques and reported in the Montreal Gazette (https://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/maps-whos-putting-montrealers-to-work).
