Pierre Cuypers - Architectural Vision and Amsterdam Centraal Station
Designed by Pierre Cuypers and opened in 1889. Amsterdam Central station, built on 8,687 wooden piles, controversial in it's construction, and used by 200,000 people every day.
It was seen to be cutting the city off from its famous waterway, The IJ, and was described as a disgusting attack upon the beauty and glory of the capital and an affront to it's history. Yet, the intentional and unintentional message of the station speaks volumes about the history and idea of Amsterdam.
