i24NEWS DESK | Ahead of Israel’s swearing in ceremony of the new government later today, incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrapped up Sunday his final nominations for ministerial roles within his tussling Likud party.
Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz will maintain his position after initial reports suggested he will have no role in Netanyahu’s next government.
According to Hebrew-language outlet Walla News, the Israeli premier retracted his earlier decision and granted Steinitz with a second term at office. However, some of his authority over water issues will be removed as fellow Likud member Ze’ev Elkin was appointed to the new position of Higher Education and Water Resources Minister.
Former military general Yoav Galat will serve as the next education minister and be part of the security cabinet.
On Saturday night, Netanyahu announced via Twitter that outgoing Economy Minister Eli Cohen would become the new intelligence minister.
Likud lawmaker Gila Gamliel was appointed to the position of environmental protection minister.
Veteran parliamentarian and a contender to Netanyahu within the Likud ranks Gideon Sa’ar was not appointed to a ministerial position.
