What to do if your child's G or GJ tube is accidentally pulled out
These instructions are part of a teaching program for families of patients at The Hospital for Sick Children. They are provided in addition to detailed hands-on training. We urge you not to follow these instructions without training and advice from a healthcare professional who understands your child’s unique needs. 04:28 - If you cannot insert your child's foley-type tube, contact your G tube specialist or go to the emergency department of the hospital that manages your child's tube.
04:35 - G tube placed more than 8 weeks
04:52 - STOP! If you do not have pH strips, do not use the tube until the placement has been checked by your G tube specialist or an interventional radiology department
05:30 - TIPS: If you cannot get any stomach contents, move your child side-to-side or sit them upright. Sometimes you get air before stomach contents will flow
06:25 - STOP: If your child recently had their medication or feed, the pH may be higher than 6 because of this. If your child's stomach contents look like any of these pictures, you may continue to use the tube
06:41 - If the pH is 6.0 or higher and the tube was very difficult to get in or the stomach contents do not look like the examples, it may not be safe to use the foley-type tube. Do not use the tube and recheck the pH in one hour
06:54 - If it is still 6.0 or higher, do not use the foley-type tube. Contact your G tube specialist to arrange a tube change or, after hours, go to the emergency department of the hospital that manages your child's tube
07:08 - STOP: When you start giving feeds with the new tube, watch for discomfort, feeding intolerance such as vomiting or trouble breathing. If you see these problems, stop the feed right away and not use the tube. Contact your G tube specialist or go to the emergency department. The tube may be in the wrong spot
