In today's video we're going to talk about an Italian word that most of you might know, but many people get confused as it appears in different forms and positions.

This word is BELLO. But maybe you heard BEL as well, or BEGLI and BEI.
What's the difference then? When should you use one and when the other when you speak Italian?

First of all, BELLO (or one of its derivates) is used to:
- give a positive opinion about the someone's or something's appearance ("Un uomo bello" - "A handsome man")
- to say that something is well-done ("Un bel lavoro" - "A well-done job")

Let's see now when we should use the different form of this adjective.

1. When BELLO comes AFTER the noun, it never changes.
Ex. "Questo libro è molto BELLO" - This book is very nice

In this case the plural is always BELLI: "Questi libri sono molto BELLI"


2. When BELLO comes BEFORE the noun, we have 3 different forms in Italian.

a) BELL' - before words starting with vowel (ex. "Un bell'uomo")
b) BELLO - before words starting with "s+consonant", ps, pn, gn, z, y, z (ex. "Un bello sport", "Un bello zaino", "Un bello yacht")
c) BEL - before words starting with all other consonants (ex. "Un bel costume", "Che bel film")

What about the plural forms?
- The plural of BELL' is BEGLI: "BEGLI uomini"
- The plural of BELLO is BEGLI again: "BEGLI sport"
- The plural of BEL is BEI: "BEI costumi")
