New Mac vs First Apple Computer: How Much Faster?

How fast are today’s Macs compared to the first Apple computers? Explore how performance has improved in each major Mac generation, all the way up to Apple's latest iMacs. The history of Apple's computing advancements makes me even more optimistic about the future!

The Apple I, hand-built by Steve Wozniak, was powered by the MOS 6502 chip, running at 1 MHz and was paired with 4KB of RAM standard. This chip held about 3500 active transistors, which we’ll use as a rough measure of speed for the rest of the video.

In 2021, the iMac saw a rebirth with Apple's new M1 chip, and came with 8GB of RAM by default. This 8-core CPU contains over 16 billion transistors, which is an amazing 4.5 million times the original Apple I.

Apple is soon expected to announce an iMac with a brand new M3 CPU. Since it’ll likely be built on the new TSMC 3nm architecture, we could see the transistor count increase by 33%. This could lead to the new iMac having 26 billion transistors in the base model, which is 7.4 million times our starting point.
