Tips on How to Purchase Your Child's First Band/Orchestra Instrument

Dr. Salvatore Vinciguerra shares with tips on how to purchase your child’s first band or orchestra instrument. In the first part of the video he shares with you how his music classroom is developing at the beginning of the school year. He indicates that his dry erase board now includes learning objectives, and activities for each period that he teaches. This information helps guide student learning and helps administrators understand what is being taught for each class. Written lesson plans contain more detailed information about lessons and activities.

Charter schools usually have limited resources and Dr. Vinciguerra explains why parents at his school must purchase or rent instruments for his band and orchestra classes. Parents should take their children to music stores to try out instruments and compare prices for renting or buying a musical instrument. Dr. Vinciguerra discusses how parents can buy instruments on Ebay and Amazon. Amazon vendors have warranties and Amazon as a company has a better return policy than Ebay for musical instruments (this depends upon the vendor selling the instruments). On Ebay parents can find high quality name brand used instruments.

Band instrument brand names that are recommended are: Selmer, Holton, Conn, Buffet, Bach, Bundy, King, Yamaha…

Lower cost band instruments….Mendini, Etude, Besson, E.F. Durand

String Orchestra brand names…Knilling, Carlos Roebelli, Cremona (ask your music teacher as some of the brands vary by region and music dealer).

Caution should be taken when purchasing too cheap of an instrument! Quality may be lacking in the materials that the instrument is made from. Examples: For band instruments, the metal can break easily. For orchestra instruments the instruments are hard to tune. Overall the tone quality of the instrument may not be as good as a higher quality instrument causing your child not to like playing it.

Sometimes purchasing a good used instruments can be better than purchasing a cheap new instrument. As your child develops their playing skills, upgrade your child’s instrument to either a higher quality used instrument or a higher quality new instrument.
