Meet Rashida Jones. Bel Air kid. Daughter of Quincy Jones and Jewish actress Peggy Lipton. Harvard graduate. Ann Perkins. And a woman who spent fifteen years being told she was too Black for white roles and too white for Black roles.

Her mother Peggy was an Ashkenazi Jewish actress from a Reform Jewish family in Lawrence, New York. Her father Quincy grew up poor on the South Side of Chicago. It was the 1970s, and as Rashida has said, it was still not particularly acceptable for them to be together. They were together anyway. Rashida and her sister Kidada were raised in Reform Judaism by their mother, celebrated Jewish holidays, and attended Hebrew school.

Her maternal grandfather Harold changed the family name from Lipschitz to Lipton in the 1930s. His parents were Russian Jewish immigrants from Belarus. Rashida went to Latvia to visit the village where her great-great-grandfather was born for the genealogy documentary "Who Do You Think You Are?" The whole village had been destroyed during the war. Everyone was killed. "I just think about how ridiculous it is that I exist," she told Terry Gross on Fresh Air.

She went to Harvard and majored in religious studies and philosophy. She wrote her thesis on 11th century Indian philosophy. She graduated in 1997 and went directly into acting, eventually landing in The Office, then Parks and Recreation, then The Social Network, then producing and writing and directing.

She practices Judaism as an adult. Her partner is Ezra Koenig, the Jewish frontman of Vampire Weekend. Their son was born in 2018.

Rashida Jones jumped into the Great American Pickle Barrel and realized she had always been exactly where she belonged.
