Meet Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks. Two kids from New York who looked at American comedy, jumped into the Great American Pickle Barrel together, and made the whole thing funnier.

Carl Reiner grew up in the Bronx. Mel Brooks grew up in Brooklyn. They met in the early days of live television, became best friends for life, and between the two of them essentially invented modern American comedy as we know it.

Carl gave us The Dick Van Dyke Show, Oh, God!, and The Jerk. He wrote, directed, produced, and performed his way into the DNA of American television. He was also the straight man to Mel's 2000 Year Old Man, a bit they performed at parties for years before anyone convinced them to record it. The conceit? Mel was a 2000 year old Jewish man who had witnessed all of human history. Which, honestly, tracks.

Mel gave us Blazing Saddles. Young Frankenstein. Spaceballs. The Producers. He weaponized absurdity, sneaked Jewish identity and Holocaust grief into mainstream American comedy, and made the whole country laugh at things it was afraid to look at directly.

Together they proved that the funniest thing you could be in America was exactly yourself.
