Building a lake part 1 - the core
In this video we dig and clean out the core to start building the dam. The core is basically a trench that is dug the length of the dam. The purpose of the core is to dig through the top soil, sand, rock or any other material that would allow water to pass through. Once the core is dug and solid ground is reached, the core is then back filled with clay soil. Good clay soil and good compaction is crucial for a successful dam. When adding the soil it is important not to add too much soil at a time before compacting as this can lead to air gaps in the soil and eventually a place for water to escape.
