Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar defended his nomination of chess legend Judit Polgar for the presidency, arguing that Hungary's next head of state should stand above party politics and embody national unity rather than political experience.
Addressing parliament in Budapest, Magyar rejected criticism that only seasoned politicians, lawyers or economists are fit for the presidency. He said Hungary had already experienced years of rule by professional politicians and argued that integrity, patriotism and a proven life of service matter more than political credentials.
Magyar told lawmakers that the president should safeguard the nation's unity and uphold the constitution, regardless of profession, gender, education or background. He said the office could be held by a scientist, historian, doctor, artist or lawyer, provided the individual possesses honesty, strength and commitment to the country.
The prime minister also urged lawmakers and the wider public to seize what he described as a historic opportunity to elect a president who is not tied to any political party. He called on political factions and Hungarians to overcome divisions and work together in the national interest.
