'One in 15 Million': Australian Woman Gives Birth to Identical Quadruplet Girls | APT
An Australian woman has given birth to naturally conceived identical quadruplet girls in Brisbane in an extraordinarily rare pregnancy estimated to occur in around one in 15 million cases.
Jenitar Na'amoana, 34, welcomed Emily, Harriet, Alexa and Catherine via caesarean section at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital on July 14. The babies were born at 28 weeks and four days and are being cared for in the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Doctors said the four girls are monozygotic quadruplets, meaning they developed after a single fertilised egg split into four. All four babies also shared one placenta. Maternal foetal medicine specialist Alexa Bendall said the hospital is not aware of another case like it occurring in Australia and described the pregnancy as extremely rare and high risk.
Na'amoana and her husband Jortham already had four children when they discovered they were expecting not one, but four more babies. Despite the risks associated with the pregnancy and premature delivery, doctors said all four girls were delivered in good condition and their mother is also doing well.
