After the conquest of Mexico and the Incas, the Spanish Empire begins to flourish. In 1565 Miguel Lopez de Legazpi finally settles the Philippines. Treasure from the New World makes up one fifth of the royal revenue.
Nonetheless, expenses far outweigh incomes, as Spain is ruined by foreign wars. In the 17th century the French, Dutch and the English set up their own colonies in the Caribbean, making the closed economic system of the empire untenable.
The Spanish Bourbons try to introduce reforms, but by this time Spain is already a second rate power. After the Napoleonic wars, the Bolivarian Revolution sweeps the Spanish from the mainland. Gradually the Caribbean and the Philippines are also lost. The last colonies in Africa are relinquished in 1975, officially ending the Spanish Empire.
