AI, Cancer & The Economy

The video describes my paper title: "Health economics evaluation of artificial intelligence in the field of oncology: a scoping review."

Is AI in healthcare just a technological breakthrough or a sustainable economic solution in oncology?

Our scoping review systematically assesses recent literature on health economic evaluations (HEEs) of artificial AI applications in oncology and explores the economic risks and benefits of integrating AI systems into oncology.
Key Insights from our Review using the CHEER-AI checklist:
Cost-Effectiveness is Leading: 75% of analysed studies utilised Cost-Effectiveness Analysis (CEA), with the Markov model being the most common approach for long-term projection.
Clinical Focus: Research is currently concentrated on early-stage care (83%) and medical imaging, specifically in colorectal, breast, and lung cancers.
The "Value" of AI: Beyond just clinical outcomes, AI demonstrated clear potential for cost reduction, workflow efficiency, and treatment optimisation.
The Challenges: We identified significant hurdles that remain—including reimbursement frameworks, data security, and the essential need for physician adoption.
The Gaps: To move from "innovation" to "routine practice," we must bridge the gaps in health equity, regulation, and physician adoption.

Conclusion: While AI shows immense economic promise, there is a vital need for more research into health equity, regulation, and ethical considerations. To truly revolutionise the healthcare system, future evaluations must encompass more diverse populations and user-centric perspectives.
