Royal Albatross ~ Colin Adjusts Sprinklers & Mists LGL & WYL ♥ LGK Comes Back & Spends Night 1.12.24

After LGK wandered off, ranger Colin came to adjust the sprinkler hose and to mist LGL & neighbor WYL. It was a very warm day and the albatross were panting to try and stay cool. One of the jobs of the rangers is too keep the albatross from overheating.

If they see albatross heavily panting (gular fluttering) or standing to cool their legs, they are likely to be overheating and could potentially desert the nest. Each nest has a small riser and its own tap on a length of piping that can be moved away from the bird while adjusting the mist spray So, they target cooling water using a tap and riser at each nest to adjust the water flow. Sometimes the rangers will also spray water from a bottle to mist the birds.

While Colin was working, LGK came back to the nest and sat down next to LGL. There were relatively no winds so it was difficult to him to get lift to leave and head back out to sea so he ended up spending the night right next to LGL. ♥ LGK departed in the morning! Thank you for watching!
