43rd Shave : Disposable Razors Going Smooth | Dorco vs Gillette #shaving #LessWaste #costofliving
This is a durability test comparing two dual-blade disposable razors: the Dorco Pace 2 Portable Razor and the Gillette Flexi Blue 2 Razor.
On the 43rd shave, the cost per shave has now dropped to:
• 0.81 cents per shave for Dorco (purchased for $0.35)
• 1.88 cents per shave for Gillette (purchased for $0.81)
I’m testing how long a disposable razor can actually last in real-world use, rather than just for a few shaves.
As a Chinese person working in Thailand, I’ve often reflected on how deeply the ideas of durability, frugality, and extending usability are rooted in Chinese culture.
For thousands of years, Chinese society lived through long periods of material scarcity. That history shaped a mindset focused on reducing waste, repairing instead of replacing, and pushing everyday objects to their practical limits.
In many ways, this mentality still exists in modern China today. It may even help explain why China became highly competitive in industries such as solar panels, electric vehicles, batteries, and manufacturing efficiency — fields where durability, cost control, and resource utilization matter enormously.
At the same time, reducing unnecessary consumption is not only about saving money. It may also be a small way to reduce waste and lessen the burden on the planet. Perhaps extending the life of everyday products a little longer is also a form of environmental awareness.
This razor test is a small reflection of that mindset.
Instead of throwing something away after a few uses, I’m curious about the real limits of everyday products in practical life.
So far, both razors are still performing surprisingly well, with no razor bumps or irritation.
What surprises me most is that the Dorco razor continues to remain comfortable even after dropping below 1 cent per shave. I honestly don’t know how many people have ever pushed a disposable razor this far.
Another interesting part of this test is the ASMR effect during shaving — the soft scraping sound of the razor cutting through the beard is oddly relaxing and satisfying.
I’ll continue the test until the razors are no longer comfortable or effective to use.
Today’s motto:
A loss today may become tomorrow’s blessing.
