Palette of Options: The Hidden Grey | Niki Zhou | TEDxAbbey Park HS Youth

We are constantly told to pick a side: stand out or stay humble, be smart or be kind, win the election or be yourself. But what if the "right" answer isn't in the black or the white, but in the "or" itself? In this witty and insightful talk, Grade 11 student Niki Zhou reveals how she escaped the trap of binary thinking—a lesson she first learned in a high-stakes debate class. Drawing on everything from the legend of Icarus to the "Golden Mean," Niki explores how finding the middle ground isn't just about compromise, but rather, it’s a strategic advantage that allows you to flip a passive situation into an active one. Hello. My name is Niki Zhou, grade 11 from Abbey Park High School. I am excited to have this precious opportunity to speak this year. My topic focuses on binary thinking, which I believe many could connect with. Since childhood, I have been drawn to the art of storytelling and public speaking, now also eager to use my own voice to share my perspectives and experiences. My interests in plot analysis of games, MVs, and anime have given me a broader understanding of narrative and a lot of other knowledge. Through this speech, I hope to offer a connection with others and encourage people with my infectiousness. See you then! This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
