A step by step tutorial on brioche stitch knitting - in one color, two colors, and in the round

The brioche stitch is a lovely reversible knitting stitch pattern that creates a very voluminous fabric. After one preparation row, it's an easy 2 stitch repeat that is perfectly suitable for even knitting beginners.

Here's the repeat:
Cast on an odd number of stitches +6
Row1 (preparation): K1, Slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front, k1 *yarn over, slip 1 purlwise, k1*, yosl1p, k1, sl1pwif, k1
Row 2 (first brioche pattern row): sl1pwif, k1, sl1, *k2tog, sl1p* k2tog, sl1pwif, k1, sl1pwif
Row 3: k1, sl1pwif, k1 *sl1p, k2tog*, sl1p, k1, sl1pwif, k1

repeat those last two rows over and over again.

An easier way to describe the repeat is: Add a 3 stitch double stockinette stitch to either side and then, after a preparation row, k2tog all double stitches (where u did yo + sl1p in the previous round) and do a yosl1p for all single stitches.

For the 2-colored brioche, you need to knit each round twice. So, cast on, and then slide the stitches to the other side and knit a preparation round across in a new color.
Only then, turn around the project and knit across in the first color in the brioche stitch, but instead of k2tog, do a p2tog. Then, slide the stitches back the other end of the needle and knit across in the second color (with k2tog) one more time.
From here, knit all rows twice (once with each color). And whenever a double stitch is below a knit ridge, k2tog, and whenever there'S a purl bump at it's base, do a p2tog.

You can knit the brioche stitch in the round in the similar way. Just alternate between rows where you k2tog all double stitches and in the next round p2tog all double stitches.
