Intarsia is a colorwork technique that allows you to knit big blocks of colors surrounded by others. Unlike in Fair Isle, you are not carrying any yarns across multiple stitches, each panel is knit with only a single yarn. You join the different panels with a special twisting method.
Whenever you change yarn, you cross the old yarn above the new yarn in order to trap the previous yarn on the backside.
It's very important that you not only twist the yarns whenever you change color but also when you weave in a new skein and finish a panel.
As most intarsia knitting patterns have a lot of color panels, you need to prepare ahead. Before you start, you need to go through your chart and figure out how many bobbins you will need. You can buy them online or create your own using cardboard.
If you want to change a color diagonally, you start with the new color one stitch ahead (or after) but twist the yarn the way you did before. Intarsia knitting is always about twisting the yarns whenever there is a new color, a color change, or you finish a panel.
