Belize Travel Tips

On our 7th day in Belize while staying at the Table Rock Jungle Lodge in San Ignacio, we decided to visit Xunantunich. Xunantunich is an Ancient Maya archaeological site in western Belize, about 70 miles west of Belize City, in the Cayo District. Xunantunich is located atop a ridge above the Mopan River, well within sight of the Guatemala border – which is 0.6 miles to the west.

We overheard a guide tell someone to tack "El Castillo" first, which is one of Xunantunich's better known structures. It is the second tallest structure in Belize (after the temple at Caracol), at some 130 feet (40 m) tall.

We had a blast walking up to the top and seeing the view and Guatemala as well. The site is beautiful and it's amazing to think what the Ancient Maya did completely by hand and determination.

After we left the ruins, we headed back over the hand-crank ferry into town where we had plans to visit Ko-Ox Han Nah (Let's Go Eat) restaurant, which came highly recommended by our bartender Oscar from Table Rock Jungle Lodge.

After lunch, we headed back to our resort to cool off in the negative edge pool. On our way back to the resort, we saw a Howler Monkey crossing the road and we were able to grab some video footage of him, which was an amazing gift from the universe...it made out day! We ended our day taking a canoe ride on the river, where we were defeated by the mini rapids. 😂
