Facial nerve & facial expression (anatomy)

The facial nerve is a bit of a beast, so let's just look at the part of this cranial nerve that innervates the muscles of facial expression. How can you use this anatomy to diagnose upper motor neurone (e.g. stroke) vs lower motor neurone (e.g. Bell's palsy) problems?
