In our last video, we talked about installing a unowix Lithium Battery in my friend Tyler’s Little Guy Max. During the installation, I noticed that the power center which also contained an integrated converter was not lithium-compatible. The model that came stock in the camper was model 8735 P. I reached out to my friends at WFCO because the informational pamphlet I found online showed that this converter did have a maximum charge rate of 14.4 volts. So I wasn’t sure if it was compatible with Lithium or not. They stated that it was not designed to work with Lithium batteries and would not charge them fully. As I previously said, standard converters will work with Lithium batteries, but they will not charge them fully.

WFCO generously sent me a converter for this project. On the outside, it looks exactly the same as the original one. However, this is the model WF-8735-AD which has the auto detect functionality. It will automatically detect whether the battery attached is lithium or lead acid. This is the same technology that is built into the beast of a converter that I recently put into our fifth wheel. I mentioned before that I didn’t really see the utility in auto-detect myself, however during this install Tyler asked me if he ever made the choice to put the lead acid battery back in his camper. Initially, I told him that we would have to change the converter back, but then I remembered that it does have the autodetect feature and it would match the charging voltage for the lead acid battery. That being said, he’s not got to stretch the legs on this lithium battery yet… once he does, I don’t think he’ll worry about that one again.
