HERCEG NOVI | Another Reason to Love Montenegro | Drive MONTENEGRO E6

My road trip in Montenegro takes me to the coastal town of Herceg Novi close to the Croatian border & overlooking the inlet to Boka Bay. Turns out Herceg Novi is yet another reason to love Montenegro!

I arrived in Herceg Novi a little later than planned following a scenic 90 minute drive from Tivat. Turns out a ferry crossing would have saved me over 20 miles of driving and knocked an hour from the journey but sometimes it's good to take the scenic route - especially when the road twists and turns to reveal vast mountains and a succession of tiny villages along the bay. So far I’ve found driving in Montenegro to be a fairly straight forward experience and the road trip to be very rewarding.

Once parked in Herceg Novi I headed down the steps towards the small but impressive old town. Local stores and taverns lined the narrow streets and just when I thought I was lost I spotted the neo-classical clock tower that serves as an entrance into the historic centre.

Herceg Novi seemed to me a typical coastal town in the Balkans with lots of friendly locals and a pleasant atmosphere. The buildings and history also contributed towards me falling in love with this little town in Montenegro.

Although I didn't see as much of Herceg Novi as I wanted I did get to visit Forte Mare - a sea fortress dating back to the 14th century, and the sun kissed harbour on the other side of Zalo Beach.

Although I planned to visit Herceg Novi during my road trip I arrived with no expectations and no schedule - all I wanted was one of those days where you just go with the flow and hopefully find something to do once there. The afternoon didn't disappoint and I was pleased I made the long drive around the Bay of Kotor to get there. That little place you know nothing about can sometimes be hiding the most incredible things!
