The Rise of Issa Rae: 10 Year Anniversary | Alana I. Smith

What’s good everyone! I’m coming back to y’all with my first video essay on the legendary Issa Rae. In this video essay, I discuss the beginning of Issa Rae’s career from the multihyphenate’s first web series Dorm Diaries to Awkward Black Girl to Insecure on HBO. Between her projects, I mention how the Writer’s Strike ‘08 impact led to a Reality TV era misrepresenting Black women, and I reminisce on the Golden Age of 90s Black Sitcoms. Lastly, I highlight the several businesses and brands that Issa has invested in. The Insecure HBO series will be missed but Issa Rae is just getting started.
