The Steel Three of East Hardwick, St Stephen (Stahlglocken)

Aaron and I turned up at this tower not quite knowing what to expect. We were going to have a look at the installation and get a recording of them being chimed at least. Dove's Guide has these bells down as "unringable" so neither of us expected a grab!

We headed up the tower, up the rather precarious ladder (which had footholes instead of rungs), to discover bells that resembled Christmas decorations, bright shiny silver things,

Checking over the installation, we decided that it was worth getting the bells up individually first to test the waters. We then rang rounds on them with no problem whatsoever. The strike notes are 1,2,3 of a 4 but the hums are roughly in a normal major scale.

The bells were cast by Naylor, Vickers & Co in Sheffield in the year 1874.
The tenor is 2-3-0 (308lb or 140kg) and is in E.

Work was done on them a few years ago with volunteer labour, however no one is quite sure who painted them silver. One feels that whoever chose the colour was not into interior design, it's a colour that does not fit at all well with the surroundings. It looks simply ghastly, darlings.
