"The singing people"- that's how the Meadow Maris and the Hill Maris are called. The Song Festival is held in the Hill Mari region, where the big river Jyngy flows into the Volga. The festival is inspired by the tradition of the Estonian Song Festival and is a powerful symbol of national cultural rebirth. At the Song Festival people can wear folk costumes. That arouses interest to the folk clothes of different regions. The Mari Song Festival became the wide cultural arrangement. This led to the creation of a new chorus. New folk music ensembles and folk dance groups were founded. The occasion unites all the Maris both from their homeland and from outside of the Republic. Film shootings took place in Hill Mari region, of Republic Mari El from 12-27 June 2004.The author expresses a sincere gratitude to the cultural workers and villagers of Hill Mari region. The film was supported by Estonian Culture Society Kindred Peoples Program and Estonian Culture Ministry.
