WRAP Syrian president Assad arrives for talks with Ahmadinejad

(2 Oct 2010)
STORYLINE:
Syria's President Bashar Assad flew into Tehran on Saturday where he was met by Iran's foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki and later by his counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the presidential palace.
His visit is expected to focus on talks over international sanctions and the Middle East as well as the political
struggles in neighbouring Iraq.
Syria and Iran wield considerable influence in Iraq among different groups - Syria with Sunnis and Iran among
Shiites.
Iraq has been locked in political stalemate since March elections, but Shiite groups now appear to have the
edge.
Iranian state TV says Assad moved into discussions with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after arriving
on Saturday.
Iran's official IRNA news agency says Assad will also be awarded the country's highest national medal for his
support to Palestinian militants and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The two countries have also remained close allies in the volatile Middle East region throughout the past thirty years.
