Syrian President Hafez al-Assad flew into Paris on Thursday (16/07) - his first state visit to a western nation in 22 years - to try to find a European counterweight to US influence in the Middle East. French President Jacques Chirac greeted the Syrian leader at the airport before heading to the Elysée presidential palace by helicopter for a first round of talks before dinner.
