Shankari Devi’s Wish for a Divine Home & Ravana’s Devotion
Shankari Devi, the divine manifestation of Goddess Parvati, lived on Mount Kailash with her beloved husband, Lord Shiva. "O Mahadeva, you are beyond all attachments, but my heart longs for a home—a beautiful dwelling where we can live together as a family, where devotion and joy fill every corner."

Shiva, the great ascetic, opened his eyes, his gaze filled with love and understanding. He had always been content wandering through the cosmos, but he saw the sincerity in Shankari Devi’s eyes.

"Devi, if your heart desires a home, then let it be so. Tell me, where shall this divine abode be?"

The mighty King Ravana of Lanka, a devout follower of Lord Shiva, soon came to know of this divine creation. Ravana was not only a fearsome warrior but also a great scholar and ardent devotee of Mahadeva. His unwavering devotion had earned him immense boons from Shiva himself.

Upon hearing about Shankari Devi’s sacred abode, Ravana was overcome with joy. He saw it as an honor that such a powerful manifestation of the Goddess resided in his kingdom. He decided that no one but he himself would inaugurate the temple with the grandest rituals ever performed.

Ravana arrived at Trincomalee with great reverence. He arranged for a Mahabhisheka (grand consecration), bringing holy waters from the sacred rivers of Bharat, fragrant flowers, and rare offerings to honor Shankari Devi. His most talented artisans adorned the temple, and his finest priests conducted the rituals.

As he stood before the radiant idol of Shankari Devi, Ravana was overwhelmed with devotion. With folded hands, he offered his prayers through his veena, composing and singing hymns in her praise. It is said that the very stones of the temple vibrated with his music, resonating with divine energy.

The Sacred Legacy of Shankari Devi Peetham
Under Ravana’s rule, the temple flourished as a powerful center of worship, attracting sages and devotees from far and wide. The energy of Shiva and Shakti merged in the sacred shrine, making it one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in the world.

Legends say that Ravana often visited the temple, seeking blessings before his battles and meditating upon Shiva and Shakti’s cosmic power. His devotion ensured that the temple remained a place of profound spiritual significance for generations.
